HELMA MARGRET STEWART (Wholgulmuth/Kussauer)
JANUARY 30, 1942 – MARCH 16, 2022
Born in Gottenhaven Germany, Helma immigrated to Canada in 1953 with her parents and sister Gudren, settling in Black Creek B.C.. Daughter of a Blacksmith and an avid gardener, Helma developed her tenacity for getting things done. Here, she started her family, first welcoming Ziggy in 1959 and Ralph in 1960. She was co-owner and postmaster of the Black Creek Store and an active member of the German/Canadian Club.
Always up for a challenge, Helma moved to Campbell River in 1979 opening ladies clothing stores (Cinderella’s), where she met and married Gaylord Stewart. Together, they moved to the family holly farm Amblecote, in Duncan, B.C. On their Quamichan lake farm, Helma connected her love of gardening and good business sense to establish Cottage Farm roadside stand, where she sold vibrant flowers, garlic, eggs, and much more. She was a familiar fixture at the Farmer’s Market and Summer Festival Committee. After years of farming and caring for Gaylords parents and their passing, Helma and Gaylord retired, selling Amblecote, Cottage Farm, and building their dream home next door. She was fortunate to spend many years with her sister and later, niece Carol (Clive) and family who live on adjacent property and whom she had a special bond.
Retirement, however, was never synonymous with slowing down for Helma. They established their second seasonal home in Mexico and to no surprise, Helma’s passion for involvement crossed borders as she quietly assumed leadership roles at her Paraiso del Mar community, establishment of Las Tres Amigas Fundraising and Rotary. Helma was integral in fundraising efforts to support scholarships, youth groups, schools, breast cancer clinics, and numerous community projects. She embodied the Rotary spirit of “service over self” wherever she went.
In 2017, Helma and Gaylord moved back to Campbell River to be closer to Ziggy in his final years. Now living on the golf course, Helma continued to garden and became known for her unique fundraising effort of collecting errant golf balls and returning them to players following a financial penalty, which was donated to the Campbell River Hospice.
Few could keep up with Helma, she could accomplish anything she set her mind to. Helma found happiness in gardening, fishing, Mexican train, cards, travelling, making the perfect roast beef and hosting people around her table for an incredible meal fit with lively conversations.
Her family was a great source of joy and pride. Family and friends will miss her vivacious, pragmatic, strong, and dynamic energy, that will be forever in the hearts of those she has left behind. Helma is survived by her husband Gaylord, her son Ralph (Denise) Kussauer, stepchildren Andrew Stewart and Karyn (Dave) Stewart, as well as grandchildren Brittany Horner, Cole (Karyn) Stewart, Sam and Alex Kussauer, Rachael, Scarlett, Raven and Dennae Stewart. Helma was also great grandma to Charlotte & Adelyn Horner and Jack Stewart. Helma was pre-deceased by her parents Hans and Margarete Wohlgemuth, sister Gudren Ferguson and son Ziggy Stewart. Although a rare condition ended Helma’s time on earth, that none of us were ready for, we know that there would never have been enough time for such an incredible human being. Helma lived a full and inspiring life. We are confident that her legacy of generosity, selflessness and strength will continue to inspire many for years to come. If there’s not fundraisers in heaven… there will be!

Nacida en Gottenhaven, Alemania, Helma emigró a Canadá en 1953 con sus padres y su hermana Gudren, y se establecieron en Black Creek B.C. Hija de un herrero y jardinera ávida, Helma desarrolló su tenacidad para hacer las cosas. Aquí, comenzó su familia, dando la bienvenida a Ziggy en 1959 y a Ralph en 1960. Fue copropietaria y directora de correos de Black Creek Store y miembro activo del German/Canadian Club.

La jubilación, sin embargo, nunca fue sinónimo de desaceleración para Helma. Establecieron su segundo hogar de temporada en México y, como era de esperar, la pasión de Helma por la participación cruzó las fronteras cuando asumió silenciosamente roles de liderazgo en su comunidad Paraiso del Mar, establecimiento de Las Tres Amigas y Rotary. Helma fue integral en los esfuerzos de recaudación de fondos para apoyar becas, grupos de jóvenes, escuelas, clínicas de cáncer de mama y numerosos proyectos comunitarios. Encarnó el espíritu rotario de “servir por encima de sí mismo” donde quiera que fuera.
En 2017, Helma y Gaylord regresaron a Campbell River para estar más cerca de Ziggy en sus últimos años. Ahora que vive en el campo de golf, Helma continuó trabajando en el jardín y se hizo conocida por su esfuerzo único de recaudación de fondos de recolectar pelotas de golf errantes y devolvérselas a los jugadores luego de una sanción financiera, que fue donada a Campbell River Hospice.
Pocos podían seguir el ritmo de Helma, ella podía lograr todo lo que se proponía. Helma encontró la felicidad en la jardinería, la pesca, el tren mexicano, las cartas, los viajes, la preparación del rosbif perfecto y la recepción de personas alrededor de su mesa para una comida increíble acompañada de animadas conversaciones.
Su familia era una gran fuente de alegría y orgullo. La familia y los amigos extrañarán su energía vivaz, pragmática, fuerte y dinámica, que estará para siempre en los corazones de aquellos que ha dejado atrás. A Helma le sobreviven su esposo Gaylord, su hijo Ralph (Denise) Kussauer, sus hijastros Andrew Stewart y Karyn (Dave) Stewart, así como sus nietos Brittany Horner, Cole (Karyn) Stewart, Sam y Alex Kussauer, Rachael, Scarlett, Raven y Dennae Stewart. Helma también fue bisabuela de Charlotte & Adelyn Horner y Jack Stewart. Helma falleció después que sus padres Hans y Margarete Wohlgemuth, su hermana Gudren Ferguson y su hijo Ziggy Stewart.
Aunque una condición rara terminó con el tiempo de Helma en la tierra, para lo que ninguno de nosotros estaba preparado, sabemos que nunca habría habido suficiente tiempo para un ser humano tan increíble. In her winter home, La Penita de Jaltemba, Helma was able to combine her belief in the value of education with her strong feeling that you should always give back to your community when she and two like-minded friends formed Las Tres Amigas. They organized five or six fundraisers each winter season, which over a five year span supported scholarships for technical school students, breast cancer clinics, youth groups, the community cultural centre, a travelling library for primary students, and provision of school supplies to schools in need. Helma loved every minute of it and the many adventures that evolved.
En su casa de invierno, La Peñita de Jaltemba, Helma pudo combinar su creencia en el valor de la educación con su fuerte sentimiento de que siempre se debe retribuir a la comunidad cuando ella y dos amigas con ideas afines formaron Las Tres Amigas. Organizaron cinco o seis eventos para recaudar fondos cada temporada de invierno, que durante un período de cinco años financiaron becas para estudiantes de escuelas técnicas, clínicas de cáncer de mama, grupos juveniles, el centro cultural comunitario, una biblioteca itinerante para estudiantes de primaria y la provisión de útiles escolares a escuelas en necesidad. Helma disfrutó cada minuto y las muchas aventuras que se desarrollaron.
