University of Guadalajara helps the people of Jaltemba bay  Regrow Corals at Coral Island  –  La Universidad de Guadalajara ayuda a la gente de la bahía de Jaltemba a recrecer corales en la Isla del Coral

Coral Island had a disaster that killed most of the corals in front of Coral Island somewhere in the early 1990’s.  Some of us remember how beautiful this environment was, but most of us are too young.  These two Doctors of Biology from the University of Guadalajara, have come to Jaltemba Bay with an impressive resume.  This is the right time to start a restoration project.  We have workers dedicated to rebuilding the wastewater treatment plant, we have local activists engaged in following the project through completion.  Now because of the interest these biologists have shown, we have community, scientific, and government support.

Coral Island tuvo un desastre que mató a la mayoría de los corales frente a Coral Island en algún lugar a principios de la década de 1990. Algunos de nosotros recordamos lo hermoso que era este entorno, pero la mayoría de nosotros somos demasiado jóvenes. Estos dos Doctores en Biología de la Universidad de Guadalajara, han llegado a la Bahía de Jaltemba con un currículum impresionante. Este es el momento adecuado para iniciar un proyecto de restauración. Tenemos trabajadores dedicados a reconstruir la planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales, tenemos activistas locales comprometidos con el seguimiento del proyecto hasta su finalización. Ahora, debido al interés que han mostrado estos biólogos, contamos con el apoyo de la comunidad, la ciencia y el gobierno.      

On March 22,  Dr. Amlicar Culpul Magna and Dra. Paola Rodriguez visited us at our weekly Jaltemba Bay Rotary meeting.  They made a presentation about the work that they have done on the Marieta islands, and the Maria Islands restoring corals.

Restoring corals on the Nayarit coast -Restaurando Corales en la Costa de Nayarit

 

Amlicar and Paola are Mexican Marine Biologists, and they work with the University of Guadalajara.  They know more about the corals on the West Coast of Mexico than anyone.  Their studies are extensive and successful in both the Marieta Islands, and the Maria Islands.  Please look at what is possible if we take care of our bay, by examining this slide show.

Amlicar y Paola son biólogas marinas mexicanas y trabajan con la Universidad de Guadalajara. Saben más que nadie sobre los corales de la costa oeste de México. After our scheduled meeting and the slide show presentation, we took a boat tour out to Coral Island to investigate the possibility of starting a coral restoration project.  The Island has its name because of the corals that once lived there.  We need to bring them back.   All of the small fish, and the recreational opportunities that existed before will return, because we are coming together to solve this problem.

Después de nuestra reunión programada y la presentación de diapositivas, hicimos un recorrido en bote a Coral Island para investigar la posibilidad de iniciar un proyecto de restauración de coral. La isla tiene su nombre debido a los corales que alguna vez vivieron allí. Tenemos que traerlos de vuelta. Todos los peces pequeños y las oportunidades recreativas que existían antes volverán, porque nos estamos uniendo para resolver este problema.

Paola Rodriguez, Dr. Amlicar Magna (University of Guadalajara), Maria Hernandez (Ocean Connectors -educating our young people from San Diego to Puerto Vallarta about marine biology), Eduardo Barrera Aviles (Biologist from Costa Canuva), Eddie Dominguez, Jack Kloepfer, and Vern Porter (Jaltemba Bay Rotary).

Las personas interesadas en este recorrido fueron: Lupita Chavez (Administradora de Isla del Coral), Dra. Paola Rodriguez, Dr. Amlicar Magna (Universidad de Guadalajara), Maria Hernandez (Ocean Connectors -educando a nuestros jóvenes de San Diego a Puerto Vallarta sobre biología marina), Eduardo Barrera Aviles (Biólogo de Costa Canuva), Eddie Dominguez, Jack Kloepfer, y Vern Porter (Jaltemba Bay Rotary).

Dr. Amlicar, and Dra. Paola investigated the Coral Island site by snorkeled around a little.  They decided that it would be possible to start a restoration Project.   The basics of the project are outlined here in English and Spanish at this web link.

On April 12 we had another meeting with the director of SIAPA.  They are fixing the wastewater treatment plant.  It is important to understand the timing of these two events.  Corals can not have a healthy environment without clean water in the bay, and currently the wastewater treatment plant is not functioning.  However, repairs are being made at the plant.  The Director of SIAPA has told us that the plant will be operational soon, and the repairs are going to be dedicated on April 30 by the Governor of Nayarit!  These two projects reinforce each other, and the end result is a healthier bay with more corals, fish, tourists, and money flowing into the community.  Please have a look at this web document (English and Spanish) for details about our conversation with the director of SIAPA for Jaltemba Bay on April 12.

El 12 de abril tuvimos otra reunión con el director de SIAPA. Están arreglando la planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales. Es importante entender el momento de estos dos eventos. Los corales no pueden tener un ambiente saludable sin agua limpia en la bahía, y actualmente la planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales no está funcionando. Sin embargo, se están haciendo reparaciones en la planta. ¡El Director de SIAPA nos ha dicho que la planta estará operativa pronto y las reparaciones las va a dedicar el 30 de abril el Gobernador de Nayarit! Estos dos proyectos se refuerzan entre sí y el resultado final es una bahía más saludable con más corales, peces, turistas y flujo de dinero a la comunidad.
